Notice the feelings of starting gatherings with Land [and Labor] Acknowledgement. Connecting with breath by feeling the feet on the indigenous land you are on. Pledge to "stand with Indigenous communities who want support and give everything we can to protect their land and culture from further devastation" #honorNativeLand
[and Labor] addresses the impact of capitalism and racism. From slavery, Chinese Railroad workers, prison industrial complex to migrant workers to sweatshop labor and beyond. The interconnectedness of people's contributions to clothing, and feeding, enables us to move through communities.
Humbling ourselves that our daily life is possible due to many people's hard work including yourself. Let's weave the acknowledgment into our state of being.
Origin of the framing Land [and labor] Acknowledgement:
More to take responsibility, rather than credit, I am including an explanation of the process behind Land [and Labor] acknowledgment as to why [and Labor] was written and the reason behind the insert form. On September 2020, (as a contractor, providing Mindful Movements services), I shared the proposal of Land [and Labor] Acknowledgement with estimated 9 public schools in San Francisco and community yoga classes I was teaching. Based on my research, around that time the coupling of land and labor acknowledgment didn't exist. A few months after sharing, I was glad to see from my google search that more people/organizations were writing their own versions Land and Labor Acknowledgement.
Land Acknowledgement exists due to the labor of the activism of Indigenous communities. Huge gratitude to the Indigenous activists for paving the way. As a non-Indigenous Woman of Color, I wanted to recognize that I was adding another layer: " and Labor" to the Land Acknowledgement to include the depth of colonialism and its consequences. The land was taken to exploit Black and Brown bodies disproportionately as free labor to advance capitalism.
It is inspiring to see different variations of Land [and Labor] acknowledgments being formulated by folks and I hope the words and actions will propel us to have a more sustainable and inclusive planet. The goal of the Land Labor Project is to inspire people to embrace Land Acknowledgement and Labor Recognition by weaving the words into actions locally and globally.
